Chile presents the first technical diagnosis on the impact of the European Union's Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) on the cattle and forestry chains

The Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), with the support of the AL-INVEST Verde programme and the Delegation of the European Union in Chile, presented through a webinar the results of the "Diagnostic study on the adaptation to the European Deforestation Free Regulation (EUDR) in Chile".. This activity marked the closing of the technical assistance that AL-INVEST Verde has provided to Odepa with the aim of promoting the adaptation to the EUDR of the two national value chains affected by the regulation: beef and forestry products.

The meeting brought together more than 50 representatives of the national public-private sector and represented a milestone by presenting the first technical diagnosis on the gaps and challenges faced by the cattle and forestry chains in Chile with regard to the requirements of the EUDR Regulation, which will begin to apply to large and medium-sized operators as of 30 December 2025.

During the opening of the event, the national director of Odepa, Andrea GarciaHe valued the study as "the first initiative of a technical nature in our country aimed at addressing in depth the challenges implied by this European regulation" and highlighted that "The results presented are a key input to continue building capacities, coordinate public-private efforts and ensure that our exporters can adapt in a timely manner. He also reaffirmed the Ministry of Agriculture's commitment to continue working with the European Union on this issue.

For its part, Assunta TestaThe European Union's International Cooperation Attaché at the Delegation of the European Union to Chile, stressed that "cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean and with partners such as Chile is a priority for the EU, especially on issues of sustainability and responsible trade. Such studies are essential to advance a just and effective green transition.".

From the AL-INVEST Verde programme, Emilio CalvoThe director of Component 2, emphasised that "One of the pillars of this programme is precisely to support Latin American countries in preparing for regulations such as the EUDR". "Chile is taking an important step and we hope to continue accompanying this process with concrete actions," he added.

During the event, the continuation of the collaboration between the AL-INVEST Verde programme and Odepa to strengthen institutional and private capacities in the EUDR was announced. The study was developed based on interviews with relevant actors in the sectors examined, together with an analysis of current national regulations and an assessment of the traceability, legality and geo-referencing standards required by the European Union Deforestation Free Regulation (EUDR).
