Action. Technical dialogues on sustainability and traceability in the meat and leather value chains.

This action consisted of organising a series of dialogues, in collaboration with the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM). An opening roundtable was held in December 2021, followed by three dialogues. In each, different aspects of the meat and leather value chains in Brazil were analysed to identify good practices and promote environmental policies to help combat deforestation. In September 2022, the closing conference was organised, where the conclusions of the dialogues were presented and a study carried out by IPAM on traceability initiatives.

Implementation period: December 2021 - September 2022.

Results

  1. The following were directly involved more than 40 actors relevant stakeholders from the Brazilian public sector, European Commission, international organisations, meat and leather value chain (meat processors, retailers, importers), certification agents, academia and civil society from Europe and Brazil. More than one hundred people attended the closing conference in Brasilia on 15 September 2022.

  2. A study on 13 experiences of traceability in Brazil and an in-depth analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, carried out through a survey developed in the framework of this initiative.

  3. Work has begun on the definition of an initiative of support to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in the state of Amazonas. The aim of the collaboration will be to create a unified management system for the Brazilian programme. Legal Meat and strengthen its monitoring, reporting and verification procedures in the Brazilian states of Acre, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia and Tocantins (Brazil).

Brazil - Technical dialogues on sustainability and traceability in meat and leather value chains

Brasilia, 19 July 2022. Component 2 of AL-INVEST Verde, in collaboration with the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), has organised a series of technical dialogues to analyse the challenges, opportunities and future efforts for sustainability and traceability of the meat and leather value chains in Brazil. The aim of this initiative, funded by the European Union (EU), is to contribute to the identification and promotion of good practices and partnerships between different stakeholders.
