The "Virtual Workshop on Plant Variety Licensing" is now available online.

13 December 2023. Component 3, AL-INVEST Verde DPI, announces that the "Virtual Workshop on Plant Variety Licensing" is now available for full viewing in its Youtube channel. This event brought together world-renowned leaders and experts in an effort to address the importance of the plant variety licensing protected in the fields of agriculture and research.

The workshop, held on 12 December 2023, was a meeting point for leaders and experts from public institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises and was organised in collaboration with the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO).

The opening was given by Miguel Rapela, academic director of the Master's in Intellectual Property and New Technologies at the Universidad Austral de Argentina, who emphasised that the crucial importance of PVP licensing in the agricultural and research sectors.

Various experts, such as the team from the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA) of Uruguay, comprising José Silva, Carlos Rossi and Florencia Marenges, discussed strategies to strengthen capacities in public institutes involved in the development of new plant varieties.

The legal perspective section was led by Antonio Villarroel, Director General of the Spanish National Association of Plant Breeders (ANOVE), who provided a valuable insight into the legal and regulatory framework for plant breeders. key legal issues in the field of licensing. This included the creation of Variety Protection Offices and the analysis of crucial aspects of licensing contracts, with an emphasis on ensuring equitable agreements.

The event also highlighted inspiring success stories in plant variety protection and licensing, highlighting the work of Embrapa Rice and Beans in Brazil and Pantanoso del Sauce in Uruguay.

The main objective of the workshop was to broaden the knowledge of the marketing of protected plant varietiesbenefiting a relevant audience in Latin American countries. This initiative was a continuation of the event held in 2022, which generated exceptional interest in the field of plant varieties, evidenced by high attendance and outstanding results in satisfaction surveys.
