What is the AL-INVEST Verde IPR Action?

The AL-INVEST Verde IPR Action aims to promote greater use and effectiveness of IP rights, particularly in MERCOSUR countries, creating opportunities for research cooperation and stimulating competitiveness and innovation, including green innovation.

AL-INVEST Verde IPR was created with the purpose of keeping IP aligned with the European Union’s open and sustainable trade policy, and capable of facing global challenges, including climate change.

Intellectual Property rights, such as patents, trademarks and geographical indications, provide an essential incentive for innovation and creativity through their protection, promoting an environment of socioeconomic development. IP can also play a decisive role in promoting innovations that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable food policies, combating pollution and helping to implement the circular economy.  It is therefore an important pillar in promoting the objectives of the European Green Deal (EVP). The Action is one of the components of the €33 million AL-INVEST Verde programme funded by the European Union. Specifically, the AL-INVEST Verde IPR Action has 2.8 million euros and will last for three years. It is directly coordinated by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), located in the city of Alicante, Spain. The Action leader is Mariano Riccheri Ponferrada who is based in Uruguay for the duration of the project.
