Action. Certification of agro-exportable products from native forest land.

This action is developed in collaboration with the Directorate General of Forestry (DGF) of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) of Uruguay. Its objective is to support public authorities in the certification of agro-exportable products produced under sustainable management of native forests. To this end, a proposal will be made for the development of a national public certification system that adds value to the chains, conserves and revalues the native forest.

Implementation period: April 2023 - May 2024.

Expected results

  1. Elaboration of diagnosis including: baseline of Uruguay's coastal zone; characterisation of the productive value chains and of the actors that can adhere to a certification system; in each of the links of the value chains of the identified productive sectors, analysis in Latin America and the European Union (EU) of the incentive systems of interest for this action, study of Uruguay's regulatory framework to identify the economic and financial incentive schemes for these sectors, proposal of incentive schemes; preliminary proposal for the operation of a verification system for the management of native forests.

  2. Report on international experiences of interest for the certification scheme proposal: mapping of forest certification experiences in Latin America and the EU that could be of interest for the Uruguayan proposal and prioritisation of four experiences.

  3. Multi-stakeholder workshops. A methodology and working agenda of several workshops will be developed, together with a document of lessons learned and conclusions from each workshop.

  4. Proposal for a native forest management verification system. The proposal will contain: indicators, criteria, economic and feasibility assessment of incentives, roadmap, identification of a pilot experience and system manual.

Support to Uruguay to promote sustainable certification of native forests

Montevideo, 18 May 2023. The AL-INVEST Verde programme, as a part of the AL-INVEST Verde Component 2 has begun providing technical assistance to the Directorate General of Forestry (DGF) of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay to promote a public certification system to guarantee the sustainable management of native forests. In this way, it hopes to help the preservation of forests and boost territorial economic development.

Uruguay and Paraguay visit agroforestry certification experiences in Spain


Madrid, 13 October 2023. A delegation of technicians from the Directorate General of Forestry of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (DGF-MGAP) of Uruguay and the Investment and Export Network (REDIEX) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Paraguay visited Spain from 25 to 29 September to learn about agroforestry certification experiences.

Workshops in Uruguay on certification of agro-exportable products from native forest land


Montevideo, 27 October 2023. Component 2 of AL-INVEST Verde organised together with the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) of Uruguay the workshop "Certification of agro-exportable products from native forests" to foster dialogue on the importance of sustainably managing native forests and, consequently, the opportunity to certify the sustainability of their products.

AL-INVEST Verde supports first shipment of deforestation-free wood chips to Europe

 

Montevideo, 11 April 2024. The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay (MGAP), through the General Directorate of Forestry, has sent to Portugal the first shipment of deforestation-free wood chips. This pilot experience has been realised in the framework of the collaboration with AL-INVEST Verde and the support of the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI).

Uruguay makes second shipment of deforestation-free timber with support from AL-INVEST Verde

 

Montevideo, 16 April 2024. Uruguay's Directorate General of Forestry (DGF) has made a second shipment of deforestation-free timber, this time to the United States. "The Forestry Directorate implemented a detailed geo-referencing and geo-localisation process of forestry establishments, ensuring that there would be no deforestation from 2020," the ministry said.
