Improving sustainable agri-food systems that strengthen traceability and promote low-carbon coffee from 15 SMEs in western Honduras in differentiated markets.

Description:

The project's main objective is to contribute to the sustainable growth and economic improvement of the private sector of the coffee value chain, supporting the transition to organic production without deforestation and access to differentiated markets for small enterprises.

During its implementation, sustainable production systems will be established on coffee farms with Small Enterprise producers with traceability processes, organic certification and no deforestation based on the "farm to fork" strategy.

In this sense, the aim is to strengthen the companies with their technicians and model farms in the territory to be spaces for on-site training of producers in agroforestry systems and agroecology, including the processing of organic coffee by-products, pest and disease management with techniques or technologies that have less impact on the environment, improving capacities for the interpretation of agro-climatic information and vulnerability to climate change, with which small businesses and producers will be able to improve on-farm decision making. The key to these activities is to make the management of production costs more efficient and thus increase productivity.

In addition, it is expected to improve technical competencies so that small enterprises can be part of a mechanism that can promote sustainable agri-food production and thus be able to access differentiated markets through a traceability system that shows the coffee process from its origin to the final consumer.

The sustainability strategy for this project will be through the management of certifications that will allow small businesses to export coffee under competitive standards. This strategy will also promote the creation of a regional coffee brand in order to generate exchanges with business organisations and establish negotiation and marketing agreements. In this way, the sustainable growth of coffee producers is sought to improve their economic income by promoting actions that reduce the impact on the environment and encourage marketing in differentiated markets for sustainable coffee production.
