Sustainable aguaje: native organisations moving towards sustainable and green harvesting

The main objective of the "Aguaje Sustentable" project is to promote the sustainable and inclusive development of the aguaje production chain in native communities in Loreto, Peru. With a focus on ecosystem conservation, agro-ecological sustainability and the generation of fair and sustainable employment for Amazonian youth and women, we seek to strengthen rural micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

One of the main actions consists of training 200 aguaje harvesters in the sustainable management of aguajales. This is complemented by the fair and equitable integration of these economic units in the aguaje production chain, promoting certifications and product traceability, and increasing the circular processing of aguaje to favour the management of organic waste in the communities.

To achieve these objectives, a variety of participatory activities will be carried out. These include workshops on forest management and sustainability, training programmes on associative business models, effective communication and leadership, and negotiation events for sustainable aguaje processing.

As a result, 10 associative rural MSMEs are expected to be strengthened, bringing together at least 150 individual rural MSMEs. In addition, at least 80% of the trained harvesters are expected to adopt responsible practices in aguaje harvesting. This will contribute to the preservation of aguajales and local biodiversity, as well as access to sustainable markets and improved production processes in the Loreto region.
