Tourist Route: Novo Ouro de Serra Pelada

The "Novo Ouro de Serra Pelada Tourist Route" project, carried out by Sebrae/PA and CIRAD, aims to promote sustainable development in the region of Carajás II, located in the heart of the Amazon, in the state of Pará, Brazil. This region, historically marked by social conflicts such as the Araguaia guerrilla and the Serra Pelada garimpo, faces significant challenges in terms of infrastructure and outreach, but has enormous tourism potential. The project seeks to harness this potential through the implementation of community-based tourism and the integration of family agro-food systems, thus fostering conscious tourism that benefits local communities and contributes to socio-economic development.

The tourism route covers the municipalities of São Geraldo do Araguaia, Curionópolis and Eldorado dos Carajás, connected by a network of roads and accessible from Carajás and Marabá airports. Despite current constraints, such as lack of signage and limited infrastructure, the initiative is expected to generate new employment and income opportunities, boosting key sectors such as hospitality, transport and local commerce. The region's proximity to the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers and the richness of its cultural and natural heritage offer visitors a unique experience that combines the beauty of the Amazon with the authenticity of local communities.

One of the central aspects of the project is the mitigation of deforestation, a critical problem in the region due to open-pit mining and the expansion of agricultural activities. Sustainable tourism, promoted by Sebrae/PA and CIRAD, plays a key role in preserving sensitive natural areas, reducing environmental impact and raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation. By educating tourists and offering viable economic alternatives to communities, the project is expected to contribute to environmental protection and the fight against climate change.

In addition, the project has a strong social component, focusing on the inclusion of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) and family farmers in the tourism value chain. This will be achieved through training and the use of sustainable technologies, promoting cooperation and knowledge exchange between the different actors involved. The circular integration of these agri-food systems will not only strengthen the local economy, but also reduce poverty and food insecurity, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In summary, the "Novo Ouro de Serra Pelada Tourism Route" represents a unique opportunity to transform the Carajás II region into a model of sustainable development, where conscious tourism, environmental preservation and empowerment of local communities are harmoniously integrated. Sebrae/PA and CIRAD, through their collaborative approach and commitment to sustainability, are laying the foundations for a future where economic development and environmental protection go hand in hand, benefiting both current and future generations.
