A total of 26,463 productive plots have been georeferenced in the the Amazon region of San Martín, in Peru, as part of the cooperation between the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) and AL-INVEST Verde, through the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). This process contributes to to strengthen traceability in the coffee, cocoa and palm oil supply chains.
Specifically, coffee accounted for 57 % of the records, followed by cocoa, with 42 %, and oil palm, with 1 %. MIDAGRI will be able to use the information generated to carry out spatial analyses, identify productive areas and support verification processes relating to the ‘deforestation-free’ criterion established by the European Union Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR).
The records relate to some 14,650 producers and cover an area of over 24,986 hectares across the ten provinces of San Martín. In total, the programme has reached 61 districts, 737 settlements and 50 indigenous communities, including scattered and hard-to-reach rural areas.
In addition to the registration, through this action, The digital skills of 24,148 producers have also been enhanced in the use of the Register of Agricultural Producers (PPA) and the AgroDigital app, tools that help to improve the management of agricultural information, the traceability of production chains and compliance with EUDR requirements.
To achieve these results, training programmes were developed for teams of agricultural extension workers and representatives of relevant organisations. This knowledge was subsequently passed on to farmers through awareness-raising and outreach activities on the PPA, AgroDigital, the EUDR and the use of the plot geolocation tool.
Cooperation with business organisations
As part of the initiative, the following were signed: 19 Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) which strengthened our work with productive organisations. These agreements made it possible to involve co-operatives, associations and other organisations linked to the coffee and cocoa supply chains, as well as creating opportunities for dialogue and coordination.
Institutional coordination was key to facilitating access to the area and addressing the geographical, climatic and social differences observed in the intervention areas. Furthermore, the work of the teams of agricultural extension workers and trained institutional representatives was essential in facilitating the participation of, amongst others, 1,206 people from indigenous communities and 7,878 women.
