More than 270 producers and representatives from companies, trade associations and the public sector, together with other key stakeholders linked to the cattle and forestry value chains, took part in a series of regional workshops on the challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of the European Union Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR).

Between July and August, seven face-to-face workshops were held in the cities of Osorno, Valdivia, Temuco, Concepción, Talca, Rancagua and Santiago, as well as a virtual closing session which enabled professionals and representatives from both sectors across different regions of the country to take part.

During the workshops, the main provisions of the EUDR and the requirements for access to the European Union market were discussed, with particular emphasis on the traceability, geolocation and due diligence mechanisms required by the Regulation.

He also highlighted the importance of these conferences as forums for exchange and dialogue between the various stakeholders in both sectors, who had the opportunity to clarify any doubts and share experiences regarding the adaptation processes required to comply with the Regulation.

The workshops were held as part of a technical assistance programme designed to support the Office for Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) in strengthening institutional and sectoral capacities to bring the cattle and forestry value chains into line with the requirements of the EUDR.

The initiative, launched by Odepa with the support of the AL-INVEST Verde programme and the Delegation of the European Union in Chile, in conjunction with the Eurochile Business Foundation, aimed to raise awareness and to strengthen the capacities of the various stakeholders in the cattle and forestry sectors with regard to the requirements of European legislation.

These activities help to strengthen national capacity to meet the requirements of international markets, thereby helping to consolidate Chile’s position as a reliable, competitive supplier committed to sustainability and deforestation-free production.
