New intellectual property guide for the Brazilian export sector

Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and Component 3 of AL-INVEST Verde for intellectual property rights (IPR), AL-INVEST Verde IPR, implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), have published the “Intellectual property guide for exporters: European Union (EU)", added.

This publication is part of the INPI's “IP Guides for Exporters” series. Its aim is to become a resource for support Brazilian exporters in protecting their intellectual property (IP). To this end, it is structured in three sections that address, respectively, an overview of intellectual property, the EU IP system and how to protect IP assets when exporting to this region, together with recommendations for action in cases of IP infringements.

Through comprehensive content, the document explains the functioning of the centralised IP systems managed by the EUIPO, including IP rights, trademarks, designs and geographical indications of artisanal and industrial products, as well as the regional patent system and copyright.

Aimed at exporters, both SMEs and large companies, it includes a practical checklist of steps to follow before entering foreign markets to protect intellectual property in their own country, plan and verify rights in the target market, and avoid issues such as omitting prior searches or exporting without registering intellectual property at the destination.

In short, this publication provides useful guidance for tackling IP challenges, maximise export opportunities to the EU, ensure correct applications, improve cooperation between the EU and Brazil, harmonisation with international IP terminology and standards.
