- Waste + Cocoa

Strengthening of the circular economy in the cocoa and chocolate chain for the promotion of sustainability and territorial development in Peru, with a focus on the department of Piura.

The project aims to promote the transition towards a more sustainable production and consumption model, encouraging the adoption of circular practices and strengthening the capacities of MSMEs in the cocoa and chocolate chain in the regions of Piura, Amazonas and San Martin.

The project seeks to promote circular economy practices in MSMEs (7 cooperatives and 800 producers) in their production processes, at the organisational level (processing and value added from cocoa products and by-products) and at the farm level (use of harvest residues, use of organic matter, etc.). An innovative aspect is that the project: i) is based on the alliance with the Regional Development Agencies (ARD); in this way it hopes to strengthen both the production process, which complies with the standards that the market demands today, and to strengthen the actors in the chain (65 professionals), with particular emphasis on the ARD, who today constitute an interesting link for the promotion of regional development in Peru; and ii) also seeks to reach the final consumer, so that a chain of impact is generated from the production level to the consumer.

In addition, the project will make available to actors linked to the cocoa and chocolate chain the experiences, practices and processes developed within the scope of the project, referring to circular economy, sustainable market articulation, as well as access to sustainability certifications in the cocoa and chocolate chain. Likewise, interregional public-private partnerships will be promoted, through which it is expected to have at least two agreements for the promotion of sustainable production and marketing practices and processes.

This whole process will not only allow MSMEs (7 cooperatives and 800 producers) to implement and strengthen their circular economy processes and improve their conditions for compliance with international standards (such as geo-referencing for EUDR compliance), but will also allow at least 50 initiatives linked to the circular economy and sustainable production to have been generated that can be managed to channel resources in the areas of intervention, as well as having trained technical staff that can continue in these processes. In addition, alliances will be strengthened and a greater participation of actors (ARD) in the commitments to promote sustainable production and circular economy will have been achieved.
