Third virtual meeting on green technology platforms for MERCOSUR IP offices

On 11 November 2024, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in its capacity as implementing entity of Component 3 for Intellectual Property Rights, held the Third Virtual Knowledge Sharing Meeting, addressed to the intellectual property (IP) offices of the MERCOSUR countries and Chile.

During the meeting, representatives from Latin American IP offices met with experts from the European Patent Office (EPO) to share knowledge on technology platforms focused on promoting sustainable innovation.

EPO specialists presented tools designed to facilitate access to green technologies, highlighting key areas such as clean energy, fire suppression technologies and water management systems. They showed how these platforms improve patent searches and optimise access to data on environmental innovations.

In addition, Latin American IP offices presented local initiatives, such as platforms dedicated to the development of green hydrogen and innovation in lithium production, both key resources to boost energy sustainability in the region. These tools were valued as useful for patent examiners, as they allow quick access to global technology trends and relevant data in strategic sectors for the green transition.

The meeting concluded with an analysis of the challenges and achievements associated with the implementation of these platforms in the regional context. Participants highlighted the importance of further fostering international collaboration and recognised the value of these spaces to drive IP innovation in support of sustainable development.

EUIPO, with its expertise in international IP cooperation, continues to lead efforts to ensure that intellectual property systems support the transition to sustainable technologies. Through these initiatives, it reinforces its commitment to innovation and the fight against climate change by promoting best IP practices linked to sustainability.
