Progress and achievements in the field of intellectual property in Uruguay

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the implementing entity of Component 3 of the intellectual property rights programme, and the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI) of Uruguay strengthened their collaboration in the field of intellectual property (IP) with a high-level event held on 19 February in Montevideo. The meeting highlighted the achievements made in Uruguay through AL-INVEST Verde IPR, with special emphasis on four key initiatives.

Professional Certification in Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property

One of the most relevant developments has been the creation of a certification programme designed according to international standards. Its purpose is to strengthen the competencies of technology managers in universities, research centres and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Updated Guidelines for the Examination of Marks

In November 2024, Uruguay adopted new guidelines for the examination of marksThe new rules are aligned with international standards and best practices of the European Union. This change aims to modernise the evaluation criteria, increasing transparency and efficiency in the registration process.

EUIPO, with extensive experience in the development of trade mark and design guidelines, has supported the drafting and revision of regulations in a number of countries, including ASEAN nations and Latin America, through cooperation projects.

Compendium of Trade Mark Law Case Law

This initiative aims to strengthen and harmonise trade mark law in MERCOSUR and Chile. The compendium, which brings together key judicial decisions and best practices from the EU, will serve as a training tool for judges and will contribute to improving the application of trade mark law and international judicial cooperation.

Digitisation of Intellectual Property Offices

In the framework of AL-INVEST Verde IPR, training activities and the integration of advanced technological solutions to optimise IP management in Uruguay were carried out. These include the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tools such as TMclass, TMview and DesignView.

EUIPO works with multiple organisations, both in the EU and internationally, to foster innovation and knowledge sharing in IP, promoting flexible and adaptable technological solutions.

The event was attended by key figures, including the EU Ambassador to Uruguay and the Uruguayan Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining. It is expected that this partnership will continue to drive innovation, competitiveness and sustainable development in the region.
