Great success at Green Rio 2023

Rio de Janeiro, 04 September 2023. For the second consecutive year, in collaboration with INPI BrazilThe AL-INVEST Verde Component 3 (AL-INVEST Verde DPI) participated in the annual sustainable development event Green Rio 2023. The event was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 31 August to 2 September.

Throughout the three days, AL-INVEST Verde DPI had a dedicated stand to promote its joint activities with INPI Brazil, where attendees could explore first-hand the advantages of geographical indications and how they contribute to the path towards sustainability. In addition, it organised the workshop "Success Stories - Applicability of Intellectual Property for Sustainable Development". 

This workshop was attended by leading experts in sustainability and intellectual property, who shared their knowledge and experiences in promoting sustainable development in Latin America through intellectual property (IP).

The president of Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), Júlio César C. B. Reis Moreira, provided an insightful perspective on the role of IP in sustainability. With extensive experience in this field, he highlighted its key role in the path towards sustainability in the region.

For its part, Diana Montero MelisThe European Commission's Deputy Head of Unit for South America, Directorate-General for Regional Operations of International Partnerships (DGINTPA), gave an overview of the relationship between intellectual property and sustainable development.

In this sense, José Antonio Cardoso Fonseca, a technical analyst at the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE), highlighted the use of collective branding as a tool to boost development, especially in the riverside villages of Tefé, Brazil.

Luis Fernando Samper, an intellectual property consultant and expert in the integration and valuation of sustainable production factors in local products, such as coffee, mentioned the importance of geographical indications in these products.

From the Government of Michoacán, Mexico, Alfredo Carlos Rendón AlgaraThe event was a great opportunity to share valuable insights on the transformation of collective trademarks into geographical indications and sustainable development policies, thanks to his experience in economic affairs and geographical indications.

Also taking part in the event were Robson Dias da SilvaThe crucial role of Intellectual Property in the transfer of green technologies was highlighted by the Economic Affairs Officer at ECLAC's office in Brazil.
