San Martin (Peru) hosts Regional Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue to advance towards sustainable coffee, cocoa and palm value chains

At the event, the collaboration project between MIDAGRI and the European AL-INVEST Verde programme to adopt the Agricultural Producers Register and digital tools was presented.

With the participation of more than 100 people - including regional authorities and representatives of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), international cooperation, technical roundtables, cooperatives and territorial organisations, together with producers - the San Martin Regional Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue for sustainable value chains for coffee, cocoa and palm was held in Tarapoto.

During the opening ceremony, authorities such as the Regional Vice-Governor, Rosa Olguita Celiz Cruz, the advisor of the Vice-Ministry of Agrarian Policies of MIDAGRI, Nelly Paredes del Castillo, the Regional Director of Agriculture, Manuel Ríos Navas, and representatives of the AL-INVEST Verde programme, IICA, and the regional technical roundtables of coffee, cocoa and palm, highlighted the importance of this joint effort to strengthen Sanmartinense agriculture in a more demanding international context in terms of sustainability.

The event provided an opportunity to socialise the progress of the Agricultural Producers' Register (PPA) in the San Martín region, as well as the digital tools that strengthen it, such as the PPA mobile application and the geolocation processes of productive plots. These tools seek to facilitating the traceability of agricultural productiona key requirement for accessing international markets in compliance with the EU Deforestation Free Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 (EUDR).

During the event, the national strategy for the adaptation to the EUDR Regulation, promoted by MIDAGRI, was presented, which seeks to consolidate public action in the territory through joint work with regional technical roundtables, local governments, provincial agricultural agencies, organised producers and strategic allies of international cooperation.

A group work dynamic was also developed, in which actors from different territories identified challenges and proposed concrete solutions to strengthen the adoption of the PPA in San Martín. These systematised contributions will be used to plan two of the central activities of the project: the training of promoters and the geolocation of more than 64,000 plots.

The event was organised in the framework of the action of collaboration between MIDAGRI and the AL-INVEST Verde programmefunded by the European Union, to adapt the coffee, cocoa and oil palm value chains in the San Martin region to the EUDR. This action is technically implemented by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
